Best non-toxic baby shower gifts
Buying for a nursery you have not seen, for a baby with no preferences yet. These picks survive not knowing.
Last reviewed October 13, 2026 — Selena H.

Baby gifting is hard in a specific way: you do not know the nursery dimensions, the registry, the parents' plans, or which bottle nipple this particular baby will accept — and nobody does, including the parents.
So this list is built around things that work regardless. Nothing here needs sizing, nothing depends on a brand decision the parents have not made yet, and everything is a consumable or a near-universal item rather than a piece of equipment that might duplicate something they already bought.

What to check before buying for a nursery
- Is it on the registry? If there is one, use it. A registry exists precisely to stop the duplication this page is about.
- Does it need sizing or compatibility? Crib mattresses need the frame size; bottle systems need the parents' choice. Everything else on this list does not.
- Is it needed now or later? Both are fine, and a later gift stands out when the newborn pile is overwhelming.
- Will it duplicate? Bottles, blankets and soft toys are the most duplicated gifts at any shower.
- Is it a consumable? Silicone bags, muslins and bottle nipples all get used up, which makes duplication harmless.
Gifts we would avoid
Clothes in newborn size, which is the single most duplicated gift and the size babies are in for the shortest time — 3 to 6 months is more useful. Soft toys, which arrive in quantity and cannot go in a crib with an infant anyway. Anything needing the nursery dimensions. Full bottle sets, before anyone knows which nipple the baby accepts. And crib bumpers, which current infant-sleep guidance advises against regardless of what they are made of.
If you want to give one thing
A glass bottle and a pair of silicone bags, with a note saying they are both dishwasher-safe. Immediately useful, no sizing, no compatibility question, displaces disposables, and inexpensive enough not to be awkward.
If the budget is larger and you can ask a question first, go in with others on the crib mattress. It is the highest-contact item in the room and the one most likely to have been bought on price.
The picks in full

1. Best for The gift parents actually use
Philips Avent Natural Glass Bottle
A glass bottle, from a widely stocked range with easy replacement parts.
- Made of
- Borosilicate glass bottle with a silicone nipple
- Certified to
- Manufacturer claimManufacturer claim; no third-party certification published.
- Milk contact
- Glass and silicone
- Plastic
- Collar ring only
- Risk
- Breakable. Use a sleeve
Feeding gear gets used several times a day from day one, and glass is the material a lot of parents want and do not get round to buying. Choosing a widely stocked range matters more than brand loyalty here: parts are easy to find, and if the baby rejects the nipple shape the parents can swap within the same system.
What you give up
Babies have strong and unpredictable opinions about nipple shape, so there is a chance it goes unused — which is why a single bottle rather than a full set is the right gift. Glass also breaks.
Who it's for
Any baby shower, as a practical gift that gets used immediately.
Who should skip it
Parents who have already committed to a different bottle system.

2. Best for A gift for later
Elk and Friends Glass Toddler Cups
Glass cups with silicone sleeves. Used from around six months, for years after.
- Made of
- Glass cup with a silicone sleeve and straw lid
- Certified to
- Manufacturer claimManufacturer claim; no third-party certification published.
- Drink contact
- Glass and silicone
- Sleeve
- Silicone, protects against drops
- Note
- Still breakable on tile
A good second-wave gift: it is not needed in week one, which means it is not competing with the pile of newborn items, and it gets used daily from six months onward and continues as a small glass long after the lids are gone. No sizing, no compatibility question.
What you give up
Not immediately useful, so it can feel less generous at the shower itself. Straw lids need a brush and real attention.
Who it's for
A gift the parents will reach for in month six and keep for years.
Who should skip it
Anyone wanting a gift used on day one.

3. Best for Small and genuinely useful
Stasher Silicone Storage Bags
Platinum-cured silicone bags, with no sizing or compatibility question at all.
- Made of
- Platinum-cured silicone, single material
- Certified to
- Manufacturer claimManufacturer claim; no third-party certification published.
- Material
- Platinum-cured silicone
- Dishwasher
- Yes
- Oven and freezer
- Manufacturer states both
An unusually good small gift for new parents: used for breast milk portions, snacks, dummies, wet clothes and everything else, washable in the dishwasher, and nothing to get wrong. It also displaces a disposable product the household is otherwise buying constantly.
What you give up
Modest as a standalone gift, so it works better paired with something else. They hold strong smells.
Who it's for
A pair-with gift, or a practical shower contribution.
Who should skip it
A centerpiece present.

4. Best for A group gift
Naturepedic Organic Crib Mattress
The highest-contact item in the nursery, and the one parents most often economize on.
- Made of
- Organic cotton surface with a food-grade polyethylene waterproof layer
- Certified to
- Certified: MADE SAFE, GREENGUARD GoldThird-party certified to MADE SAFE, GREENGUARD Gold.
- Waterproofing
- Polyethylene, not vinyl
- Flame retardants
- None added per the brand
- Firmness
- Firm, as infant guidance requires
If several people are going in together, this is the single most defensible big-ticket baby gift: a firm crib mattress with built-in polyethylene waterproofing, MADE SAFE and GREENGUARD Gold certification, and no added flame retardants per the brand. It is also the item parents are most likely to buy cheaply because the cute things got the budget.
What you give up
Expensive, and you must confirm the crib size and that they have not already bought one — this is the one gift on the page where you have to ask first.
Who it's for
Group gifts and grandparents.
Who should skip it
A surprise, since crib size and existing purchases need checking.

5. Best for A gift that lasts
Grimm's Wooden Building Blocks
Solid wood with published finishes. Unused for a year, then used for a decade.
- Made of
- Solid lime or alder wood with water-based, plant-oil finishes
- Certified to
- Manufacturer claimManufacturer claim; no third-party certification published.
- Material
- Solid wood
- Finish
- Water-based stain and oil per the brand
- Note
- Small pieces in some sets
The gift that is still in the house when the child is eight. Solid wood with water-based stains and plant-oil finishes, open-ended enough to be played with at two and at seven, and it hands down to siblings. Check the age marking on the specific set.
What you give up
Not used for the first year or more, which makes it a patient gift. Some sets contain small parts, so read the age marking before giving it for a newborn.
Who it's for
Anyone who wants to give something that outlasts the baby stage.
Who should skip it
Parents who need practical help right now.
How we chose, and what we did not do
Every product on this page was checked against its published material composition and its third-party certifications, with each claim labeled as certified, manufacturer-stated or independently tested by a named party. We do not run a lab and we do not claim to have used these products — the full method is here.
Questions people actually ask
What is a good non-toxic baby shower gift?
A glass bottle, silicone storage bags, or glass toddler cups for later. All three avoid plastic in the feeding path, need no sizing, and get used daily.
What should I not give at a baby shower?
Newborn-size clothes, soft toys and crib bumpers. The first two arrive in quantity and the third is advised against by current infant-sleep guidance regardless of material.
Is a crib mattress too big a gift?
As a group gift it is the most defensible large purchase in the category — highest contact hours in the room, and the item most often bought cheaply. You do need to check the crib size and that they have not already bought one.
Should I buy a bottle if I do not know their system?
One bottle from a widely stocked range is a reasonable gift; a full set is not. Babies have unpredictable nipple preferences, so give something they can try rather than commit to.
