What MADE SAFE certification covers
A full-formula screen against a hazard list, across categories no other mark spans. It says nothing about whether the product works.
Last reviewed October 13, 2026 — Selena H.

MADE SAFE is a certification that screens a product's full formula against a list of substances known or suspected to harm human health, animals, aquatic life or ecosystems — a list the organization describes as covering some 6,500 ingredients. It spans categories that no other single mark covers: cleaning products, personal care, bedding, baby goods and household items.
What makes it useful is the full-formula requirement. A brand cannot certify a product while withholding part of its composition from the screen, which in categories like cleaning products — where disclosure rules are weak — is a meaningful commitment.

What MADE SAFE does NOT cover
- Performance. Nothing in the certification requires the product to clean, wash or work well. EPA Safer Choice does require that; MADE SAFE does not.
- Supply-chain labour conditions. Not in scope. GOTS covers this for textiles.
- Organic content. Unrelated to the screening.
- A brand's whole range. Certification is per product. Several brands have some certified products and others not.
- Substances outside its hazard list, though the list is broad.
How it differs from Safer Choice
They are complementary rather than competing. Safer Choice is the stronger signal that a cleaning product will actually clean; MADE SAFE spans more categories and screens against a health-hazard list rather than EPA's criteria.
| MADE SAFE | EPA Safer Choice | |
|---|---|---|
| Who runs it | A non-profit certification program | The US Environmental Protection Agency |
| Screening | Full formula against a health-hazard list | Every ingredient regardless of percentage, against safety criteria |
| Performance required | No | Yes — must perform comparably to conventional products |
| Packaging reviewed | Not a core criterion | Yes, against the Safer Choice Standard |
| Categories | Cleaning, personal care, bedding, baby, household | Mostly cleaning and institutional products |
Which brands actually hold it
Certification is per product, so the useful question is always which product rather than which brand. Branch Basics has certified its Concentrate, Oxygen Boost, hand soap and candle. Naturepedic has certified its bedding line, from mattresses and pillows through sheets and changing-table pads, and its mattresses also carry GREENGUARD Gold. Avocado lists MADE SAFE alongside GOTS, GREENGUARD Gold, EWG Verified and OEKO-TEX STANDARD 100 Class I for its mattresses.
MADE SAFE publishes a certified-companies directory, which is the place to check rather than a brand's own page — the directory is the certifier's record, and a brand page is a brand page.
How to use it when shopping
- Check the specific product, not the brand, in the certifier's directory.
- Read it as a hazard screen, which is what it is — not a performance review and not an organic claim.
- Pair it with a performance signal for cleaning products. Safer Choice certification, or reviews, or your own test.
- Stack it with category-specific marks. For bedding, MADE SAFE plus GOTS answers more than either alone.

The picks in full

1. Best for Certified cleaning
Branch Basics Concentrate
MADE SAFE certified concentrate, diluted at home into several cleaners.
- Made of
- Plant- and mineral-derived surfactant concentrate, diluted at home
- Certified to
- Certified: MADE SAFEThird-party certified to MADE SAFE.
- Certification
- MADE SAFE certified concentrate
- Format
- One concentrate, several dilutions
- Fragrance
- None
One certified concentrate replaces a cupboard of single-purpose sprays, which is both the environmental and the exposure argument in one product. MADE SAFE lists the Concentrate among its certified products, alongside the brand's Oxygen Boost, hand soap and candle.
What you give up
You mix it yourself, which some people will not keep up. It is expensive per bottle before dilution, and it is not a disinfectant.
Who it's for
Everyday cleaning with a certified formula.
Who should skip it
Anyone who needs a registered disinfectant, or who wants a ready-to-use spray.

2. Best for Certified bedding
Naturepedic Organic Mattress
MADE SAFE and GREENGUARD Gold across the bedding line, not just the flagship.
- Made of
- Organic cotton, organic wool or PLA batting, encased coils
- Certified to
- Certified: MADE SAFE, GREENGUARD GoldThird-party certified to MADE SAFE, GREENGUARD Gold.
- Certifications
- MADE SAFE and GREENGUARD Gold across the bedding line
- Latex
- Optional, not standard
- Note
- Also makes the matching crib mattresses
Certification across mattresses, pillows, sheets and changing pads rather than on one hero product. For a bedroom where you want the whole set covered, that breadth is the differentiator.
What you give up
Expensive. Latex is an option rather than standard.
Who it's for
Certifying a whole bedroom.
Who should skip it
Budget buyers.

3. Best for Certified nursery
Naturepedic Organic Crib Mattress
The same certification program applied to the item a baby spends most hours on.
- Made of
- Organic cotton surface with a food-grade polyethylene waterproof layer
- Certified to
- Certified: MADE SAFE, GREENGUARD GoldThird-party certified to MADE SAFE, GREENGUARD Gold.
- Waterproofing
- Polyethylene, not vinyl
- Flame retardants
- None added per the brand
- Firmness
- Firm, as infant guidance requires
A crib mattress is the highest-contact item in a nursery, and this is one of the few in the category with both MADE SAFE and GREENGUARD Gold, a polyethylene rather than vinyl waterproof layer, and no added flame retardants per the brand.
What you give up
Expensive for an item used for two or three years, though it resells well.
Who it's for
The single highest-value nursery purchase.
Who should skip it
Anyone needing a budget crib mattress, where firmness and fit matter more than certification.
How we chose, and what we did not do
Every product on this page was checked against its published material composition and its third-party certifications, with each claim labeled as certified, manufacturer-stated or independently tested by a named party. We do not run a lab and we do not claim to have used these products — the full method is here.
Questions people actually ask
What does MADE SAFE certified mean?
That a product's full formula was screened against a list of substances known or suspected to harm human health, animals, aquatic life or ecosystems — around 6,500 ingredients. It is a hazard screen, not a performance review.
Is MADE SAFE better than EPA Safer Choice?
They are different. Safer Choice reviews every ingredient regardless of percentage and also requires the product to perform comparably to conventional products. MADE SAFE spans far more categories but makes no performance requirement.
Which brands are MADE SAFE certified?
Certification is per product. Branch Basics has certified its Concentrate, Oxygen Boost, hand soap and candle; Naturepedic has certified its bedding line; Avocado lists it among several marks on its mattresses. Check the certifier's own directory rather than a brand page.
Does MADE SAFE mean a cleaner disinfects?
No. Disinfection claims require EPA registration as a pesticide, which is a separate process. A MADE SAFE certified cleaner cleans; it does not make a kill claim.
