Best non-toxic air fryers, and the thing nobody discloses

An air fryer is a small convection oven with a coated basket in it. The basket is the entire question, and uncoated baskets barely exist.

Countertop convection oven with a glass door and wire racks

This is the hardest category on the site to give a clean answer in, and we would rather say so than manufacture one. An air fryer is a small convection oven, so the housing and the fan are irrelevant to this question. The food sits in a basket, that basket is almost always coated, and the coating chemistry is almost never published.

Genuinely uncoated stainless baskets are rare — a search of the market turns up accessory baskets marketed as uncoated 304 stainless, but very few complete appliances built that way. So the realistic routes are: choose an oven-format unit where food sits on a stainless rack instead of in a coated basket, choose a model from a brand that at least publishes what the coating is, or use a convection oven you already own with a stainless basket accessory.

Why this category has no clean winner

Three reasons, all structural. Air fryers are a high-volume, price-competitive appliance category, so coated aluminum baskets are the cheap and effective engineering answer. Appliance brands generally publish less material detail than cookware brands do, because appliances are sold on functions rather than surfaces. And genuinely uncoated stainless baskets are rare enough across the market that the few available are mostly accessories rather than complete appliances.

The honest conclusion is that if your priority is never cooking on a coating, the answer is a convection oven with a stainless rack rather than any air fryer — and your existing oven on convection does most of what an air fryer does, more slowly.

What to ask before you buy one

  1. What is the basket coated with? If the answer is "non-stick", that is not an answer. Ceramic and PTFE are different and the brand knows which.
  2. Can the basket be replaced separately? A coated basket is a consumable; if you cannot buy a new one, the appliance is the consumable.
  3. Is it a basket or a rack format? A rack means food is not on a coating.
  4. What is the maximum temperature? Air fryers run hot — often 400F and above — which is exactly the condition that shortens coating life.
  5. Does the manufacturer publish anything at all about materials? Many publish nothing, and that is information.

What we ruled out

Every model whose maker publishes nothing about the basket material or coating, which is most of the market. Accessory stainless baskets presented as complete solutions, since they need a convection oven you already own — a legitimate route, but not an air fryer purchase. And "ceramic-coated" baskets with no further detail, where the word is doing marketing work rather than describing a sol-gel coating.

Countertop convection oven with a glass door and wire racks

1. Best for Avoiding a coated basket

Breville Smart Oven Air Fryer

Oven format: food sits on stainless racks, not in a coated basket.

Made of
Stainless steel housing with stainless racks and a coated interior cavity
Certified to
Manufacturer claimManufacturer claim; no third-party certification published.
Food support
Stainless racks and a mesh basket
Cavity
Coated interior walls. Food sits on the rack, not the wall
Note
Oven format avoids a coated basket entirely

This is the cleanest available answer to the basket problem — change the format. In an oven-style air fryer the food sits on a stainless rack or in a mesh basket while the coated surfaces are the cavity walls, which food does not touch. It is also a better appliance for most households than a drawer unit, since it toasts and bakes as well.

What you give up

Counter space, and a higher price than a basket unit. The cavity interior is still coated, so if your objection is to the coating existing anywhere in the appliance this does not satisfy it.

Who it's for
Anyone who wants air frying without food sitting on a coating.

Who should skip it
Small kitchens and tight budgets.

Multicooker with an air fryer lid attached

2. Best for Two surfaces, one appliance

Instant Pot Duo Crisp

Stainless pressure-cooking pot plus a coated air-fry basket. Use whichever you want.

Made of
Stainless steel inner pot plus a coated air-fry basket
Certified to
Manufacturer claimManufacturer claim; no third-party certification published.
Pressure-cook pot
Stainless steel, uncoated
Air-fry basket
Coated. This is the part to check
Note
Two cooking surfaces in one appliance

The useful thing here is the choice: the pressure-cooking inner pot is uncoated stainless, so most of what this appliance does happens on stainless, and the coated basket is only involved when you actually air fry. For a household that air fries occasionally and pressure-cooks often, that is a sensible split.

What you give up

The air-fry basket is still coated, so the air frying itself has the same question as any basket unit. Also a bulky appliance with two lids to store.

Who it's for
Households already using a multicooker that want occasional air frying.

Who should skip it
Anyone whose main cooking method would be the coated basket.

Compact countertop oven with a glass door

3. Best for Published ceramic coating

Our Place Wonder Oven

Oven format with a stated ceramic coating rather than an unnamed one.

Made of
Steel body with a ceramic-coated interior tray set
Certified to
Manufacturer claimManufacturer claim; no third-party certification published.
Interior
Manufacturer states ceramic coating
Functions
Air fry and toast
Footprint
Small

Among compact air-fry ovens this is the one that says what its interior coating is — a ceramic coating per the brand — rather than describing it as a non-stick finish. It is also an oven format, so food sits on a tray or rack. Publishing the coating type is a low bar that most of this category fails.

What you give up

Small capacity, premium price for the size, and ceramic coatings have the same one-to-three-year behavior here as they do on a pan.

Who it's for
Small kitchens that want a disclosed coating and an oven format.

Who should skip it
Large households and anyone cooking for more than two.

4. Best for Basket units, if you want one

Instant Vortex Air Fryer

The conventional format, from a brand with findable product documentation.

Made of
Steel body with a coated basket and crisping tray
Certified to
Manufacturer claimManufacturer claim; no third-party certification published.

Coated. Check the model's published coating
Capacity

Note
Coating is the variable to check, not the body

If a drawer-style air fryer is what fits the kitchen, this is the mainstream option with the most accessible documentation and parts support, and baskets are replaceable, which matters because a coated basket is a consumable. We are including it as the realistic answer rather than pretending the category has an uncoated winner.

What you give up

The basket is coated and the coating specification is thin. Replace the basket when it scratches rather than cooking on a damaged coating.

Who it's for
Households that want a basket air fryer and will replace the basket as it wears.

Who should skip it
Anyone who wants the food to never sit on a coating.

How we chose, and what we did not do

Every product on this page was checked against its published material composition and its third-party certifications, with each claim labeled as certified, manufacturer-stated or independently tested by a named party. We do not run a lab and we do not claim to have used these products — the full method is here.

Questions people actually ask

Are air fryer baskets coated with Teflon?

Many are PTFE-coated, some use a ceramic coating, and most brands describe it only as "non-stick". Ask the manufacturer directly; the ones that will tell you generally advertise it.

Is there an air fryer with no coating?

Complete appliances with genuinely uncoated stainless baskets are rare. The practical alternatives are an oven-format air fryer where food sits on a stainless rack, or a stainless basket accessory used in a convection oven you already own.

Does a convection oven do the same thing?

Largely, yes — an air fryer is a small, fast convection oven. A conventional oven on convection with food on a stainless rack achieves similar results more slowly, with no coated basket involved at all.

Should I replace a scratched air fryer basket?

Yes. A scratched coating is actively leaving the basket, and air fryers run at temperatures that accelerate it. Check that replacement baskets are sold separately before buying any model.
