Best non-toxic laundry detergents
Detergent residue stays in fabric that sits against your skin all day. Short, fully declared formulas are the whole recommendation.
Last reviewed October 13, 2026 — Selena H.

Laundry detergent is the one cleaning product whose residue stays in contact with your skin all day, because that is what fabric does. It is also the category with the shortest and most legible ingredient lists available — if you buy powder.
The reason is structural. A liquid detergent is mostly water, and water in a bottle needs preservatives, thickeners and solubilizers. None of that cleans anything; it exists because the product is a liquid. A powder needs none of it, which is why four- and five-ingredient formulas exist in powder form and not in liquid.

How we chose these
Full ingredient disclosure was mandatory. After that we looked for the absence of two specific additives — optical brighteners and fragrance — and for a dose small enough to leave little behind in the fabric.
We did not test washing performance, and that limit matters more in this category than most: enzyme-free short formulas are genuinely worse on set-in stains than mainstream detergents, and we would rather say so than pretend the trade-off does not exist.
The two additives worth avoiding
Optical brighteners are dyes engineered to remain on fabric and fluoresce under UV light so clothes appear whiter. They do not clean anything; they stay against your skin by design, which is the whole objection.
Fragrance in laundry is formulated to survive the wash and the dryer, which makes it the one scent you cannot walk away from. FDA's labeling rules allow an entire fragrance mixture to be declared as a single word because formulas are treated as trade secrets, so "fragrance" on a detergent is not a disclosure. Unscented is the clean answer.
Why sheets and pods are not the clean option
Laundry sheets and pods solve dosing and storage, which are real problems. What they do not solve is formula length: their ingredient lists are typically as long as a liquid's, plus a film-forming polymer to hold the format together.
They are convenient and they are not what they are marketed as. If the reason you are reading this page is ingredient simplicity, a powder is the format that delivers it. Powder versus liquid covers the full comparison.
What we ruled out
Any detergent with optical brighteners. Scented detergents where the fragrance mixture is not itemized. Pods and sheets, for the reason above. Fabric softener as a category, which coats fibers and reduces absorbency. And "free and clear" versions of mainstream brands where the full formula is still not published — removing dye and perfume from an undisclosed formula leaves it undisclosed.
The picks in full

1. Best for Shortest formula
Molly's Suds Laundry Powder
Five declared ingredients, no optical brighteners, no preservative system needed.
- Made of
- Sodium carbonate, sodium bicarbonate, magnesium sulfate, sodium coco-sulfate
- Certified to
- Manufacturer claimManufacturer claim; no third-party certification published.
- Format
- Powder
- Ingredient count
- Five, fully listed
- Optical brighteners
- None per the brand
Sodium carbonate, sodium bicarbonate, magnesium sulfate and sodium coco-sulfate, all listed. This is the short-formula argument made concrete: no preservatives because there is no water to preserve, no thickeners because it is a powder, and no optical brighteners per the brand.
What you give up
Cold-water performance is weaker than a liquid, and powder can leave residue in hard water or a poorly designed dispenser. There are no stain-fighting enzymes.
Who it's for
Warm washes and anyone shopping on ingredient count.
Who should skip it
Cold-only washing, and heavy stain treatment.

2. Best for Smallest dose
Charlie's Soap Laundry Powder
A very short powder formula with an unusually small dose per load.
- Made of
- Washing soda, sodium metasilicate, a biodegradable detergent
- Certified to
- Manufacturer claimManufacturer claim; no third-party certification published.
- Format
- Powder
- Fragrance
- None
- Note
- Very small dose per load
Fragrance-free, short, and dosed in a very small scoop — which matters twice over, because less detergent per load means less residue in the fabric and a container that lasts months. For sensitive skin the combination of no fragrance and minimal residue is the useful part.
What you give up
No enzymes, so set-in stains need pre-treatment. No scent at all, if you like scent.
Who it's for
Fragrance-free households and sensitive skin.
Who should skip it
Anyone who wants stain-fighting enzymes in the detergent.

3. Best for Cold-water washing
Attitude Laundry Detergent
Plant- and mineral-sourced surfactants, listed in full, unscented version available.
- Made of
- Plant- and mineral-sourced surfactants, water
- Certified to
- Manufacturer claimManufacturer claim; no third-party certification published.
- Format
- Liquid
- Fragrance
- Unscented version available
- HE
- Yes
The liquid pick, for the very common case of washing in cold water where powder underperforms and can leave residue. Ingredients are fully listed and an unscented version exists, which addresses the two things that matter most in a liquid.
What you give up
A longer ingredient list than any powder, necessarily — a liquid needs preservatives and thickeners. Plastic jug rather than cardboard.
Who it's for
Cold washes, modern machines, and direct stain pre-treatment.
Who should skip it
Anyone whose priority is the shortest possible list.

4. Best for The fabric softener replacement
Distilled White Vinegar (cleaning strength)
Half a cup in the rinse, instead of a softener that coats fibers.
- Made of
- Diluted acetic acid, typically 5 to 6%
- Certified to
- Manufacturer claimManufacturer claim; no third-party certification published.
- Active
- Acetic acid
- Disinfectant
- No. It is a cleaner, not a registered disinfectant
- Avoid on
- Stone, grout, cast iron
Fabric softener works by coating fibers, which is why towels stop absorbing and activewear starts holding smells. Distilled white vinegar in the rinse cycle softens by removing detergent residue instead of adding a coating, and the smell does not survive the dry.
What you give up
Do not use it with bleach, and do not pour it directly onto rubber seals repeatedly. It does not perfume laundry, which is the point.
Who it's for
Anyone whose towels have stopped drying them properly.
Who should skip it
People who want laundry to smell of something.
How we chose, and what we did not do
Every product on this page was checked against its published material composition and its third-party certifications, with each claim labeled as certified, manufacturer-stated or independently tested by a named party. We do not run a lab and we do not claim to have used these products — the full method is here.
Questions people actually ask
What is the cleanest laundry detergent?
A powder with four or five fully declared ingredients, no optical brighteners and no fragrance. Powders can be that short because they contain no water and therefore need no preservatives, thickeners or solubilizers.
Are laundry sheets non-toxic?
They solve dosing and packaging rather than formula length — their ingredient lists are typically as long as a liquid's plus a film-forming polymer. If ingredient simplicity is the goal, powder is the format.
What are optical brighteners and why avoid them?
Dyes designed to stay on fabric and fluoresce under UV so clothes look whiter. They have no cleaning function and remain against your skin by design, which is the reason to skip them.
Does vinegar work as fabric softener?
Yes, differently. Softener coats fibers; vinegar in the rinse removes detergent residue, which softens without a coating and keeps towels absorbent. The smell does not survive drying.
Why does my powder detergent leave residue?
Cold water, hard water or a poor dispenser. Dissolving it in warm water first or reducing the dose usually fixes it; if not, a liquid is the better format for your machine.
